CAC Calls on Regulators to Reject Unfair Utility Rate Increase

Citizens Action Coalition urges state regulators to protect Hoosier consumers from unnecessary utility rate increases and demand greater accountability from monopoly utilities.
Indianapolis, IN — Citizens Action Coalition today called on the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to reject a proposed utility rate increase that would place unfair costs on Hoosier households while allowing monopoly utilities to continue shifting risk onto consumers.
The proposed increase comes as families across Indiana are already struggling with rising costs for housing, food, health care, and essential utility service. CAC is urging regulators to scrutinize the filing, require transparency, and ensure that utility shareholders, not captive customers, bear the costs of unnecessary or imprudent investments.

Consumer affordability must come first
Utility service is not optional. When monopoly utilities ask for higher rates, regulators have a responsibility to determine whether the request is justified, whether costs are fairly assigned, and whether consumers are being protected.
CAC’s position
CAC is asking regulators to:
- Reject unjustified costs that would raise monthly utility bills.
- Require stronger transparency around proposed investments.
- Protect residential customers from subsidizing large industrial users.
- Hold utilities accountable for past planning decisions and cost overruns.
What happens next
The case will continue before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. CAC will participate through formal intervention, review the utility’s filing, submit testimony where appropriate, and continue informing the public as the case moves forward.
